A "Macawnivore" Mistake
: Chunky, the brightly colored saber-tooth tiger, was created by accident. An artist was bored with the desert's drab colors and painted the predator with vivid "parrot" feathers; the directors loved it so much they kept the design for the final cut.
- Scary moments: A few intense predator chases and a massive geological disaster (the "end of the world"). Sensitive kids (under 6) might find the Macawnivore or the final tectonic shift a bit stressful.
- Humor: Mostly clean, with some mild potty humor (Thunk peeing on a fire, a character eating bugs).
- Themes: Family loyalty, fear of the unknown, innovation vs. tradition, and the importance of saying "goodbye" to old ways.
- Language: Very mild (one use of "idiot" and "stupid").
The line, "That's what being a father is. You have to learn to let them go," delivered by a cartoon caveman, has leveled more than a few adult viewers. The Croods 2013 understands that parenting is a series of calculated retirements. You teach them to survive, then you step aside so they can live.
The sequel, arriving seven years later in 2020, leaned harder into the comedy and the "civilization vs. nature" trope. But it could never recapture the raw, emotional weight of the first film’s chasm jump.
