The PC version used Ubisoft’s (at the time) controversial online authentication system. Even with a valid key, you once needed a persistent internet connection. While that requirement has since been patched out, the need for a key to initially install and activate remains absolute.

When Ubisoft published the game in 2011, PC piracy was rampant. To combat this, they required a unique alphanumeric serial key during installation. This key was typically printed on the back of the manual inside the DVD case. If you bought the game second-hand without the manual, or if you lost your original case, the game became useless.
