Equipment Interview Questions Updated ((link)) | Static

Interviews for static equipment engineers typically focus on three core areas: technical code knowledge (specifically ASME Section VIII), practical design experience

Part 5: Advanced & Scenario-Based Questions (For Senior Roles)

: How do you decide the requirements and sizes for inspection openings manually using the code, rather than relying solely on software? Secondary Stress static equipment interview questions updated

Q: How do you assess fatigue risk for static equipment? A: Identify cyclic load sources (pressure cycles, thermal cycles, vibration). Use stress analysis (hand calc or FEA) to get stress range; compare with fatigue curves (ASME VIII fatigue assessment or S-N curves) including weld detail factors. Reduce stress concentrations via geometry changes, design for flexibility, and control operating cycles. Interviews for static equipment engineers typically focus on

Describe Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC).HIC occurs in sour service (H2S environment) where atomic hydrogen enters the steel, recombines into molecules at inclusions, and creates internal pressure that leads to blistering and cracking. PDF (with code references and diagrams) MS Word

  1. Q: How are additive manufacturing (3D printing) and static equipment related?

Key points: differentiation between prescriptive (code) and risk-based intervals, data quality, damage mechanisms (corrosion, creep, fatigue), documented follow-up actions. Follow-up: What minimum data do you need to run an RBI assessment?

How do you handle a request from a senior that violates safety regulations?

This behavioral/safety question tests your integrity. The answer must prioritize safety and code compliance over hierarchy.

  1. Hi Andy,

I was an EMC test engineer (4 yrs.) and then an EMC design engineer for Cisco Systems in San Jose, CA for 18.5 yrs. and I retired in 2011. I now would like to come out of retirement and I think that I would like to work again in EMC testing. Do you have training that would allow me to apply for EMC testing positions? I am not affiliated with any company. Specifically, I am interested in the cost of any potential training for someone who is not affiliated with any company.

    Regards,

    John Hess

  2. This has been a great resource for me as a new EMC Test Engineer, and I’m sure that I will continue to come back to it. Thank you!
