Report: Managing Stardew Valley Save Data on PC (Current as of 2026)

SMAPI (Stardew Modding API) still uses the same save location, but mods may add extra data to save files.

• Path: ~/.local/share/StardewValley/Saves
• How to find it quickly:
  • Back up before: Installing/updating mods, changing game version, or major in-game events (e.g., changing farm type via mods).
  • Use SMAPI’s automatic backups: SMAPI saves the last 10 backups in %AppData%\StardewValley\ErrorLogs. Look for folders named _save-backup.
  • Cloud saves: Steam Cloud can conflict with manual backups. To be safe: disable Steam Cloud for Stardew Valley (right-click game in Steam → Properties → General → toggle off “Keep games saves in Steam Cloud”).
