Essential BIOS Files (2025/2026 Recommended)

RetroArch BIOS packs are essential collections of firmware files required to emulate specific hardware, such as the PlayStation 1, Sega Saturn, and Neo Geo. While the RetroArch software is free and legal, BIOS files are copyrighted property of the original hardware manufacturers (like Sony or Sega) and are not included with the software.

Step 2: Locate the RetroArch "system" folder

This is where ALL BIOS files go. It is not the roms folder.

Sony PlayStation (PS1):

scph5500.bin , scph5501.bin , scph5502.bin (Required for Japan, US, and EU regions).

Pro Tip:

Always look for packs that match the Libretro naming convention . RetroArch is very picky about filenames; even one capital letter out of place can cause a core to fail. Troubleshooting Common BIOS Issues

Consequently, the developers of RetroArch and other front-ends maintain a strict stance: they do not distribute BIOS files. They provide the infrastructure, but the user must navigate the legal and technical hurdle of sourcing the firmware. The demand for a "free" 2025 pack is essentially a demand for someone else to have already taken that legal risk for the user.
